The benefits of dynamic-pickups in waste management

Humans generate more than 2.01 billion tons of solid waste each year, which is forecasted to increase to 3.4 billion tons by 2050 according to the World Bank. The increasing volume and complexity of waste combined with the existing inefficient waste management lead to unsustainable use of resources. 

This is also a serious risk to both our ecosystem and overall human health. The existing waste management is largely characterized by outdated technologies and business models, where waste often is picked up on fixed intervals. 

This results in unnecessary pick-ups of half-empty trash bins and containers. Furthermore, the fixed intervals also allow for both bins and containers to occasionally overflow and thereby further increase the inefficiency.


At WasteHero, we wish to continuously challenge the existing inefficiencies within waste management that both businesses and cities experience. We are optimizing the existing ways of managing waste through sustainable solutions, where we aim to convert waste into valuable resources.

The next generation of waste solutions is driven by data and based on the consumers waste traffic. We have developed our solution in collaboration with multiple cities and businesses to understand their challenges regarding waste management. 

Our solution includes fill-level sensors for monitoring waste streams utilizing IoT networks to transfer and store the data.

The data is used to predict when a waste bin is full and requires to be picked up. Our prediction model estimates when the fill-level reaches a certain level, then utilize this data and insight to instead create dynamic pick-ups of waste.
